Vladislav Delay “Tummaa” Review
Published by Independent Ireland. Written by John Meagher.

Let’s get something clear from the off: Finnish electronica experimentalist Sasu Ripatti makes music that truly challenges the listener. If you’re not willing to invest the time necessary to absorb these seven wilfully abstruse tracks, there is nothing to be gained from an album that many would dismiss as discordant noise. Those who persevere with it — and artists on cult Yorkshire label, Leaf, are usually worth the extra effort — will find Tummaa to be a rewarding experience. Originally a drummer, Ripatti’s love of percussion is patently clear, as is his desire to deliver unexpected, highly inventive beats. With piano and keys help from Craig Armstrong, who first came to acclaim thanks to his early 1990s work with Massive Attack, and clarinet and saxophone duties courtesy of Argentinean musician Lucio Capece, Ripatti has created a minimalist, highly atmospheric and — in places — haunting soundtrack.
